New Beginnings...

.. gibt's hier. Ich habe mit einem neuen Blog die letzten paar Stunden herumgespielt. Alles ist noch nicht neu eingestellt, aber vorlaeufig reichts mal. Wir werden ja sehen, wie sich alles in den naechsten Wochen entwickelt. Einen vielen Dank fuer alle meine treuen Leser, die mich hoffentlich weiterhin besuchen werden:)

Das Ende? - The End?

Ich glaube ich bin bei dem Punkt angelangt, wo ich mir nicht sicher bin, ob ich weiterbloggen moechte. Mein uspruenglicher Gedanke war, kulturelle Unterschiede zwischen Oesterreich und den USA - so wie ich sie erlebe oder empfinde - aufzuzeigen. Aber nicht immer sind die Unterschiede gegensaetzlich.
Wir haben heuer recht viele Ausfluege gemacht, bei denen wir sehr vieles gesehen haben. Etwas mit "Hier ist es so, und dort ist es so.." zu beschreiben ist oft sehr schwierig und auch vielleicht gar nicht noetig.
Auf der einen Seite bin ich also schon noch interessiert, ueber meine neue Heimat zu berichten. Allerdings auf eine andere Art als ich es bisher machte. Viele Fotos, kurze Anmerkungen mit meinen Gedanken darueber - ohne spezifisch Vergleiche zu Oesterreich zu machen. Das verlangt fast einen anderen, neuen Blog mit neuem Namen und allem. Also muss darueber nachgedacht werden.
Auf der anderen Seite frage ich mich, ob ich wirklich die Zeit und auch genuegend Ideen dafuer habe. Nicht dass nach 3 posts wieder monatelang Funkstille herrscht.

I think I got to the point where I am not sure if I want to continue blogging. My original idea was to show cultural differences between Austria and the US - like I experience or see them. However, those differences are often oppositional.
We went on many trips this year where we saw quite a lot. Very often it's difficult and probably unnecessary to describe something with "here it's done this way, there it's done that way...".
On one side I am still interested showing aspects of my new country. However in a completely different way than I did sofar. More pictures with short comments without comparing everything explictly to Austria. This is asking for a new blog wit new name and everything. So I have to think about that.
On the other side I am wondering if I have enough time and ideas to start a new blog. I don't want to have 3 posts and then nothing else for months.

Brot - Bread

Wenn man Deutschsprachige fragt, was sie denn hier von zu Hause am meisten vermissen, dann bekommt man meist "Brot" zur Antwort. Mir ist aber noch nie der Gedanke gekommen, dass es umgekehrt genauso sein koennte, naemlich dass Amerikaner ebenfalls "ihr" Brot in Europa vermissen. Gardner hat kuerzlich seine Probleme mit den deutschen Broetchen beschrieben und mich damit darauf Aufmerksam gemacht, dass es hier noch keinen Brotpost gibt;).

Was ist nun so anders zwischen Deutschem und Amerikanischem Brot?
Deutsches Brot ist in erster Linie dunkler und hat eine harte Kruste. Laut Wikipedia gibt es ca. 600 Brotsorten im deutschen Sprachraum alleine - ich werde daher nicht auf alle einzelnen hier eingehen. In den USA findet man hauptsaechlich Weissbrot, schon quadratfoermig geschnitten, sodass man daraus leicht Sandwiche machen kann. Weiters sind die Broetchen fuer die Hamburger und Hotdogs aeusserst beliebt. Wenn man moechte, kann man aber auch hier Vollkornbrote bekommen - nur schmecken sie doch etwas anders und sie haben auch keine harte Kruste. Panera hat eine grosse Auswahl an verschiedenen Broten und sie schmecken auch sehrt gut.

Kleingebaeck ist hier nicht so zahlreich vorhanden - man findet allerdings in jedem Supermarkt Semmeln (Broetchen), die hier Kaiserrolls genannt werden. Auch Kipferl (Hoernchen) sind hier bekannt - allerdings unter dem franzoesischen Namen croissants.

Unterschiede gibt es nun auch wie und wann man Brot hier isst. Niemals zum Fruehstueck. Meist eben als Sandwich zum Mittagessen oder zwischendurch. Burger werden immer zwischen Broetchen gegessen und nicht wie die Faschierten Laibchen (Frikadellen) lose am Teller serviert. Wenn man hier also ein Brot isst, dann hat man immer zwei Scheiben Brot und dazwischen was immer man auch moechte. Nur eine Scheibe Brot mit Belag zu haben ist hier sehr ungewoehnlich.

Was ist eure Erfahrung mit Brot in anderen Laendern oder auch im eigenen Land? Pusteblume hat gerade geschrieben, wie gut ihr bayrisches Brot schmeckt, vor allem weil es das anscheinend nicht so in ihrer Gegend gibt. Was ist eurer Lieblingsbrot?

Nachdem die oesterreichischen Ausdruecke sich gerade beim Essen so von den Deutschen (in Klammer) unterscheiden, habe ich mich bemueht, beide anzufuehren, soweit ich sie kannte:)

When you ask German-speaking people what they miss most from home you will most likely get "bread" as an answer. It never occured to me though that it could also be the other way round, that Americans would miss "their" bread in Europe. Gardner recently talked about his problems with the German buns and therefore let me know that I never posted about bread here before.

So what's so different now between German and American bread?
German bread is darker and has a harder crust. I am not talking about pumpernickel bread, which is a type of German bread. According to wikipedia there are about 600 different types of bread in the German-speaking countries alone. Too many to list all of them here.
In the US the most common bread is white bread, already cut in slices and shaped in squares. Perfect for sandwiches. Then there are the buns for hamburgers and hot dogs. If you are interested you can find whole wheat breads here as well, they just taste different though and they are still very soft compared to the German ones. Panera has a nice assortment for different kind of breads here.

There are not too many different kinds of smaller breads available. However, you can find Kaiser Rolls and Croissants - both European imports - in every grocery store here.

There are also differences in how and when to eat bread. Bread is not eaten for breakfast in the US. Most times as a sandwich for lunch or for a snack. Meat patties are always served in buns here. Not so in Austria, where you might eat a slice of bread with it, but the pattie is not between buns. Eating a slice of bread as a snack is just that - 1 slice and any topping you would like on it. It's not common to have 2 slices of bread together over there, like it is very uncommon to only eat one slice of bread with lunchmeat and/or cheese here. The only time I can remember having a sandwich with 2 slices of bread together was when taking lunch to school (they don't serve lunch in schools there).

So, what's your experience with bread in other countries or even in your own country? Pusteblume just mentioned how much she likes Bavarian bread, because it's not very common to get in her area. What's your favorite bread?

Milchkarton - Milk carton

Ich bin kein grosser Milchtrinker. Mir ist es immer auf den Nerv gegangen, 1/2 Gallonen oder gar 1 Gallonen Milch nach Hause zu schleppen, nur um dann die Haelfte wegschuetten zu muessen. Jetzt ist mir endlich aufgefallen, dass ein paar Geschaefte Milch auch in kleineren Mengen verkaufen, naemlich in ca. 1l (946ml) Milchkartons, so wie ich es von zu Hause aus gewohnt war. Ist mir viel lieber so. Das passt genau fuer eine Woche.

I am not a big milk drinker. It always annoyed me having to buy 1/2 gallon or even 1 gallon jugs of milk, and then to throw half of it away. I finally noticed that a couple of stores are also selling milk in smaller amounts, in quart-sized milk cartons - just like in Austria. I like it that way much better since it's just the right amount for a week.

Mode - Fashion

Das Geschaeft habe ich bei einem Ausflug in Delaware gesehen. Ich finde es immer faszinierend, wie europaeische Kleidung hier als modischer oder eleganter angesehen wird. In Oesterreich wollen alle, junge Leute zumindest, immer den neusten Trends aus den USA folgen. Vor allem wenn es um Jeans geht.

Seen on a trip to Delaware.... I always find it fascinating how European style clothes are considered to be more fashionable or elegant over here. In Austria everyone, meaning young people, wants to buy the latest US fashion. Especially when it comes to jeans.

Kalender - Calendar

Mir ist heute von jemanden gesagt worden, dass die deutschen Kalender angeblich von oben nach unten ausgerichtet sind anstatt von links nach rechts. Ich hoere das zum ersten Mal. Hat schon jemand so einen mal gesehen?

Someone told me today that German calendars are supposedly laid out from the top to bottom instead of left to right. That's news to me. Has anyone ever seen one like that?

Cupcakes

In meinem anderen Blog habe ich letztes Jahr mal ueber Cupcakes geschrieben. In den letzten paar Monaten ist mir aufgefallen, dass ca. 2/3 der Besucher den Blog durch die Cupcakes gefunden haben. Und alle sind von Deutschland. Ich hab mich schon gewundert, warum jetzt dort ploetzlich anscheinend so ein Cupcakewahn herrscht. Vor kurzem hat mir jetzt endlich jemand einen Kommentar hinterlassen und mich aufgeklaert, warum die dort jetzt so beliebt sind: Sex and the City. Ich muss zugeben, dass ich weder die Sendung noch den Film gesehen habe und ich daher ahnungslos bin.

In my other blog I wrote about cupcakes last year. In the last view months I noticed that about 2/3 of my visitors find the blog searching for cupcake recipes. All of them are from Germany. I was already wondering why everyone is suddenly interested in cupcakes over there. A couple weeks ago someone finally left a comment and enlightened me: there is a cupcake boom in Germany just because of Sex and the City. I have to admit that I have never seen the show or the movie. That's why I am so clueless.
